"Buddy, it’s fruitcake weather,” exclaims Miss Sook Faulk, in the lovely short story A Christmas Memory . For Buddy and Sook the holiday is a break from the routine of daily life. They gather pecans, a little bootlegged whiskey and other ingredients for cakes that will be sent to acquaintances they have met briefly, and to people they've never met at all, such as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt . Perhaps your holidays are marked by traditions like Buddy and Sook, or

The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled, according to Greek philosopher Plutarch . The lineup of what the library is offering this month (and every month for that matter) can definitely be considered tinder to ignite fires in your mind. There are six book clubs ranging from mystery to classics. A sampling of titles up for discussion include A Still Moment by Eudora Welty, The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store , North Woods and The West: A New His

“When it’s good, it’s very good, but when it’s bad it’s horrid.” Forgive me for altering Longfellow’s poem , but it sizes up the situation perfectly when confronted with a balky technology problem. If you don’t have a resident techno whiz to sort out your confusing phone, tablet or laptop, we have a new service that may help. Teen volunteer Jack Woodard staffs a weekly help desk at the Warrenton library for the technology challenged. Teaching and troubleshooting only; no d

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR: FEBRUARY 2024
There’s a wow factor that greets visitors to Warrenton these days. The beige Britches building at the corner of Culpeper and Main Streets has been transformed by a brilliant rendering of the Blue Ridge mountains . Pure alchemy, perhaps. Or, maybe not. You can learn more about murals and what it takes to create them when award winning artist Craig McPherson discusses his work with retired journalist Lou Emerson on February 25, the next installment of our Sundays at Two series

“If you build it, they will come.” On December 18, 2003, the Bealeton branch library opened its doors to the southern Fauquier community. A beautiful building, the 10,000 sq. ft. library took its architectural cues from the “roofy” Bealeton depot that a few years later would serve as its meeting room. From that December day 20 years ago, the branch library has served as the hub of the community. Folks have gathered to light a community Christmas tree, visit with Santa and ma

In the movie The Way We Were longtime buddies Hubbell and J.J. while sailing recount the best Saturday afternoon, the best month, the best year. Perhaps not the whip and snap of sails but the stillness and quiet of winter evenings will invite you to contemplate the year’s best book, best meal, best time with family and friends. We’ve done our own little bit of reflecting and here are some highlights of our year serving you. Of course, the news is filled with those in the kno
