CR’s director and head of product and food safety testing comments that many of the “10 Really Risky Foods” identified in this issue are important to a healthy diet, and states that CR’s ranking “is meant to help you understand how to properly handle them, and when to skip certain ones in order to stay safe.”  That perspective helps de-escalate the fear factor around this topic while still taking the issue of food safety seriously.  CR reports that data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration show that fewer than 2000 people were sickened last year by pathogens found in the 10 foods described in this issue.  The pathogens most often responsible for foodborne illness are Salmonella, E. Coli, and Listeria.  Check out CR’s safe handling suggestions for “When You’re Cooking at Home” and “When You’re Out and About.”  Picnic season is right around the corner!

Speaking of properly handling food… if you’re wondering how to get those wine or spaghetti sauce stains off counter tops or out of the dining room carpet, CR has the solution.  When spills happen, minimize staining by acting quickly.  Be prepared with “Your Anti-Stain Toolkit.”  These items will help address spills and stains immediately and appropriately.  CR also offers a few tips for “Dealing with Outdoor Grime,” including how to deal with oil, grease and mildew on porches, patios, and outdoor furniture.

Spring has sprung and it’s time to do some spring cleaning!  Are you dreading putting up the screens, cleaning the gutters, repainting the porch?  CR knows that those yearly tasks can be difficult.  Read “I Need a Little Help Here!” for some good information on how to assess your needs and find someone to do those around-the-house jobs.  When you pick up the phone use CR’s handy “7 Questions to Ask” to guide your conversation with prospective handymen.  Consult the sidebar on “What Help Costs Right Now” to assess a contractor’s bid on your job.  Once the work is underway CR also offers tips on how to “Make Sure the Work Goes Well.”
