Consumer Reports December 2017: Online Shopping

Posted by vicky on

Check out this information in the December issue of Consumer Reports:

Smart Online Shopping

More and more people prefer to do their holiday shopping online rather than fight the crowds in stores and malls. This month’s cover article, “Shop Online With Confidence,” discusses how to get a good deal (lowest prices, free shipping), return policies, how to avoid scams and more. It also includes shopping tips for those procrastinators out there!

Digital Photo Services

Are you looking for a place to print your digital photos? You have many options. Stores such as Walgreens and Walmart offer digital photo printing, as do online services such as Amazon, Shutterfly and Snapfish. Consumer Reports recently tested many of these services on color, clarity and contrast. Check out the “Picture Perfect” article to view the ratings.

Exploding Sunroofs

This may sound like something out of a horror film, but it happens more often than you think. Consumer Reports analyzed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s consumer complaints database and found that in the last 20 years in the U.S., shattered sunroofs have been reported in at least 208 vehicle models, representing 35 brands. Experts agree that since many sunroofs are now larger, with more glass, it’s more difficult to ensure that they won’t shatter. Check out the “Shattered” article for more information.

The following topics and products are also covered in this issue:

  • Drills, including reviews for general-use and heavy-duty drills
  • Long-term auto loans
  • Home care for seniors
  • Reliability predictions for 2018 cars

Each branch of the Fauquier County Library has the print issues of Consumer Reports from 2011 up to the current issue. The Find It Virginia databases have an index to the issues from February 1, 1976 to the current issue, and the full-text of the reviews from January 1, 1999 to June 1, 2009. You can access Find It Virginia from any library computer, or from home with your Fauquier County Public Library card. You can also see past summaries of Consumer Reports prepared by library staff online.
